At the start of 2019, I hosted my first themed dinner party. The theme was France: French wine and cuisine. Everyone had to bring a French dish and French wine. I think it was a big hit and I can’t wait to do more of these!
To be honest, I did not come up with the idea for a themed dinner party like this. One of my good friends and her family do these kinds of dinners all the time and I had to try it out for myself.
First, I created online invitations which had a list of everyone’s course responsibilities. One person was to bring an appetizer, another was to bring a starter, another to bring a side dish, a dessert, etc. I made the main dish this time. Of course, everyone’s dish had to be French somehow. It didn’t matter if it was store-bought or homemade. Everyone also had to bring a French bottle of wine. Bonus points if it complemented the dish that was brought.
For the appetizer, we had a charcuterie board with French cheeses, crackers, fruit, and fig jam. The photo below is a half-eaten board. It looked better originally but I forgot to take a photo!
For the starter, we had French onion soup. My friend brought a bottle of Pinot Noir to go with the soup because it was supposed to complement the dish. Boy was she right! I’ve never had French onion soup before, so I was already excited to try it. Then you add the Pinot Noir and it was like an explosion of flavors, in a good way!
For the main dish, we had beef bourguignon. The sides were au gratin potatoes and a polenta and vegetable bake.
For dessert, we had macarons, a pear clafoutis, and cheesecake.
There was also SO much wine! It was all delicious. I think everyone had fun preparing for this (at least I hope so!)
I didn’t get photos of everything because I was more focused on the company, the food, and the wine. Now I need to decide what theme to do for the next themed dinner party!
